A while back a question came up in the office, “Where do we find our camp inspiration?”
Well, that’s a great question but I quickly caught myself asking more.
How do you find it?
When do you know you’ve actually found it?
As I sat there wondering what I was going to say, it occurred to me that I didn’t have one specific moment or place at camp that brought me inspiration. It’s the entire experience. The people. The views. It’s all the minor details that overtime transform into the big picture.
So, where do I find my camp inspiration?
I’m glad you asked.
I find it every single day when I walk out my front door and see the Guadalupe River peacefully flowing past. I find it under the falling leaves at The Big Tree come wintertime. I find it the counselors that wake up every morning at 7:35 with a smile on their face. I find it in the roars that come from War Canoe practices. I find it in the songs we sing each day at lunch and dinner. I find it in my campers’ faces after they’ve reached a new goal or run to me with a problem or exciting story. I find it in the Art Studios where instead of dust, glitter covers every inch of the room. I find it in Pizza Cheers and Vespers that consume Sunday evenings.
I find it at the Rock Wall where girls climb (literally) to new heights which each passing day. I find it in the office where High Noon is the most intense moment of my life. I find it at Whale’s Pool where the rushing water always knows how to bring peace and serenity to my anxious mind. I find it when scaling down Switchback for the tenth time that day with a midget on my back because she’s terrified of the rocks. I find it when counting points for the Tribe Cup. I find it when Taps sounds to signal another summer day has come and gone. I find it in the stars that light up the Texas sky and the sun that never fails to bring beauty every morning.
I found it the moment I stepped onto camp in 2013.
I found it when I came home, when I found my heart.
People ask me all the time why summer camp is such a huge component in my life and there just aren’t enough, or the right words to describe how this place has changed me. Each day I wake up and get to see the beauty that God is and how He has blessed me, as well as the rest of the staff here, to live at the most gorgeous place in the world. Each moment is a learning curve and with every fleeting task I find out how much I truly adore this camp.
People don’t think my job is real and that’s okay. For a long time I didn’t think places or jobs like this existed, but here I am living my dream.
Here I am, finding that inspiration in every little nook and cranny that is camp. <3
Lots of love,
Fal <3
