Daily Update - Closing Day Part 1

Thursday, August 4, 2022

This morning we slept for an extra half hour, and after breakfast we enjoyed watching the Quadrille Olympians riding the Olympic Themed Quadrille. They did such a great job!

For our final gymkhana, we took the top five riders from each sisterhood that were not in Quadrille. They competed in one event where they went around a triangle of barrels as fast as possible. In first place we had Catherine B, second place KK H, and third place Sky H. The final score was 8-3 for the Crossed Arrows!

The All-Camp Swim Meet was a great way for us to all gather on the waterfront for one of the last times. The final score was T-Birds 219 to Arrows 240.

Today was the great war canoe race. What a clean race! Both canoes paddled straight and true, no veering. It was close, but the Arrows prevailed this time. I will explain that as soon as the Crossed Arrows boat touched the finish line, the boat caught on the lane rope and pushed the girls back a bit, BUT the time has already been stopped as it stops as soon as the boat hits the lane rope. The final times were so close: Crossed Arrows 56.095 to T-Birds 56.195.

Immediately after the war canoe race we held our Naming O’ the Sisters event.

We gave five 10-year diamonds: two to campers, three to counselors, 7 girls were recognized for being seven-year campers,15 for coming five summers, and 21 three-year campers were awarded medallions.

The Sunflower Award for friendliest Junior went to Penelope W.

Kitty’s Korner Award for Counseling Excellence went to Rookie Dany G and Veteran Georgia F.

The Star LITe Award went to Alexis W.

High-point campers were Minion Mae S, Sophomore and All-Camp Adele L, Junior Trista L, Senior Judith M, and Teen Catherine B

The Crossed Arrows won the Cup.

Before the candlelight vespers, we enjoyed a rowdy sing-along in the Dining Hall, and a birthday cake for camper Ruby P.

And after dinner in a beautiful ceremony, Catherine B was named the newest recipient of the Jo Jones Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

Daily Update - Award Show

Tuesday, Aug 2, 2022

Today was the last day of regular TTS activities since Thursday will be the day that we hold all-camp gymkhana (including quadrille), all-camp swim meet (including war canoe), and Memorial Vespers. These events will be recorded and shared on Venmo and Campanion as soon as we can get them edited and uploaded.

There will be one more rotation of MWF activities tomorrow.

Today at Siesta we had one of our last days for campers to shop in the Trading Post and so many girls came to shop!  After siesta tomorrow, we will be closing accounts and issuing refund checks for any money remaining on account. Refunds below $5 will be left on your camper’s account for future use. You will receive these checks at closing with your camper’s activity portrait proofs!

Life skills class, upon request, learned how to change a tire, and I believe it’s the first class I’ve ever had successfully took the tire off and put a new tire on within the 45 minute class period

Tonight is our Awards Show and All-Camp Revue. We will add more on that tomorrow!

Just a Reminder: We have a long tradition (borrowed from Camp Stewart) of "bribing" our campers to sign up for next year before leaving this year. Each girl who does will receive her choice of a nice "bribe". We will have bribery available at pickup, or if you respond before then, we will go ahead and let the girls choose and receive the gift. Here is the LINK to the sign up form.

Daily Update - Counselor Mountain Top

Monday, Aug 1, 2022

Today the whole camp is a buzz about Counselor Mountain Top! But before that happened, there were a lot more notable events that took place!

During 3rd and 4th period today, our Riflery and Archery Teams went over to Stewart to participate in the meets.

Our Rifle Team: Maria G,, Hailey G, Birdie C, Keni W, and Instructor Sawyer P.

Our Archery Team: Flora B, Ali G, Sky H, Valeria M, Ruby P, Penelope W, Sage W, and Instructor Gilley E.

Our Top Ten Juniors were announced. These girls will present the Memorial Vespers on Thursday night, when the new recipient of the Jo Jones Memorial Sportsmanship Award is announced. It’s a nice honor. The ten are Sydney B, Phoebe C, Birdie C, Elana C, Louisa F, Maria G, Hattie H, Trista L, Billye M, and Charlotte Y.

Today for division gatherings we had an all camp gathering on the Ark! This is where the Firelighters and Sponsors revealed to the camp which hill the counselors would be going up for Counselor Mountain Top! For the former campers that are now staff, it is a special time to relive some of the special moments that happen with the sisterhood, and it also is revealed to the campers which sisterhood they were formerly in! After each counselor was given a sisterhood, the Crossed Arrow campers and counselors stayed on the Ark and the Thunderbird campers and counselors headed to the pickle ball court to do some cheers before lunch! Our all camp gathering today was quite eventful, and it was a good way to start off the Counselor Mountain Too festivities!

Tonight was our counselor mountaintop! This means that the counselors were invited to join one of the two sisterhoods for the night. The counselors joined the campers in going up the hills and cheering. This night is incredible special for everyone on camp because it is the first time that the staff is able to experience exactly what goes on during mountaintops. For the staff that has been campers it is their only time that they are able to be associated with their sisterhood. We are so thankful for this night and love seeing all of the counselors join right in with the campers.

After everyone came down from Mountain Top, we announced our Sister’s O’ the Week. They were: Minion Zara L, Sophomore Laurel C, Junior Maria G, Senior Sam B, Teen Maddy M, LITe Avery S, and Counselor Vale S

Daily Update - T-Bird Vespers

Sunday, July 31, 2022

Most campers got to enjoy sleeping in this morning. A few unfortunate cabins had to get up early to take their Activity Portraits but they were able to go back to their cabins and enjoy a nice quiet morning until the 11:15 call for worship!

Worship Today we had a very special guest speaker for Worship. Long time Heart camper and counselor Renee Coale Willis came out to speak to our girls about trusting God’s plan for us. Renee wrote one of our Sunday camp favorite songs, Three Little Pine Trees. Just as the song illustrates, Renee spoke about how if you trust in what He has planned for you, the end result might actually go above and beyond what you expected.

Fried chicken, mashed potatos, veggies, and homemade rolls. What more could you want for lunch! This camper favorite meal never disappoints!

Sundays mean siesta is extended, and everyone is always so thankful for the extra 30 minutes of rest!

Our last Seminar Sunday was a huge success. We held 13 different seminars today. Art Archery, Baking, Fiesta, Homemade Ice Cream, Lacrosse, Leatherworks, Top Shot Riflery, Spa, Free Swim, Water Fun, Whale’s Pool Play, Quadrille Practice, and Mat Making!

Dominos showed up early tonight so we called campers to line up for Flag early and had an earlier dinner! Pizza cheers were great this week. The Teens really shined and were selected to go first.

T-Bird Vespers happened shortly after dinner and the girls knocked it out of the park!

Daily Update - S'minion Swim Meet

Saturday, July 30, 2022

Today we celebrated counselor Ale B’s birthday!

Today we held our second-to-last TTS classes. The girls are working hard to finish achievements, and meet their goals for the summer!

We held a special sisterhood gathering today where campers wrote special notes for their Sponsors and their Firelighter! It is a special memento these girls will get to take home and cherish forever.

The countdown is on… all term we have had cabins aiming to get perfect cabin inspections, and so far there are only two cabins left in the running. Yarrow Yard 1 and Adobe Village 2 are hoping to make the streak continue until Wednesday morning so they can win the Sonic lunch and movie during siesta that day!

Speaking of Adobe 2, after lunch the girls finally cashed in their Vegas Night winnings and watched Sing 2 while enjoying a Chick-fil-A tray of nuggets!

Immediately after 6th period, the S’minions were called down to the waterfront to prepare for their divisional swim meet! In the end, our T-birds out swam the Arrows 98-62.

A movie under the stars… is there a better way to spend a Saturday evening?  We had candy and sodas, and watched Trolls World Tour!

Tomorrow we are all excited to sleep in and have a leisurely morning!

Daily Update - Olympic Field Day

Friday, July 29, 2022

Today we had our Olympic Field Day!

The campers had so much fun running, competing, and spending time together.

The sisterhoods started their days off with a pajama pep rally to get them excited for the day to begin. The campers were decked out in USA gear, gold medals, and we had many people representing other countries for the variety of constijes we had this morning!

After breakfast and many reminders to drink water, the sisterhoods headed to their meeting spots to begin their cheers. Once they lined up, and the sisterhoods sang their “We love you” songs to each other, it was time for the day to begin!

Each sisterhood said the sportsmanship prayer, and we headed to warm up before the campers began their running races. The running events went in order of division, so our Minions were up first! The Minions and Sophomores competed in the 25 and 50 meter races, the Juniors in the 50 and 75 meters, the Seniors and Teens in the 100 meters with one round of the 400m dash!

After each division ran, we had a long water break before Cat and Mouse to cool down. Cat and Mouse went to the Crossed Arrows won two rounds in a row, so they were victorious in Cat and Mouse!

After the Crossed Arrows cheered for their victory, the SWC and PWC War Canoe teams gathered to prepare for Tug O’ War. SWC also won the first two rounds in Tug O’ War, so they ended of the morning events with a win. With SWC celebrating, we headed to lunch and extended siesta!

After siesta, we had the SWC vs PWC speedball game first up, which went to SWC. While that was going on, the S’Minions competed in crate ball, which went to the Thunderbirds. The next round was Senior/Teen speedball, which was won by the Crossed Arrows and Junior dodgeball, which was won by the Thunderbirds.

After each division played their game, we headed to the waterfront fot the War Canoe practice race. The time for SWC was 57.35 and PWC 57.63, a close victory for SWC!

The High Point Campers for the Second Term Olympic Field Day were Minion Rosie N, Sophomore Syd S, Junior Piper E, Senior Brooke J, and Teen KK H..

With a score of 482 to 608, Olympic Field Day went to the Crossed Arrows!

Daily Update - Covert Ops

Thursday, July 28, 2022

Another day of fun and exciting classes for our campers.

We love when counselors turn in their campers' achievements. We have had so many achievements submitted over the last few days! We can’t wait for your camper to tell you all about what she has accomplished this term!

After 6th period we held the last divisional gymkhana of the term. Senior Gymkhana ended with a score of 50 Crossed Arrows/70 Thunderbirds. We will have another smaller gymkhana at the end of the term so be on the look out for those results!

After the gymkhana, campers headed straight to eat out! They quickly made their way through the lines because camera were excited to get in all black for the evening event!

Tonight was covert ops! This is an all camp favorite night activity. The campers get together with their big sisters and then attempt to run across camp gathering tickets. The catch is that there are counselors hidden all around camp ready to stop the campers on their journey. Another fun surprise is that the heartlites are hidden and if they are found they are either extra negative or positive points. The score of tonight ended up being a tie! How crazy is that? Both the arrows and thunderbirds had 205.

Daily Update - Calendar Girls

Wednesday, July 27, 2022

Today was the birthday of camper Stella Rincon! She was celebrated highly with all of her friends and received a fabulous looking birthday cake at dinner to share with her table!

We had our annual surprise visit from the State Health Inspector. We are always biting our nails to make sure that they see the quality of our efforts, because we work really hard to make sure we meet not only their standards, but those of our campers/parents we serve. After careful review of our paperwork, inspections of activities, and a review of both our health care center and kitchen, we are happy to say we passed with no issues!

Today at lunch the much anticipated Brother Sister Picnic took place at The Heart! The brothers and sisters were reunited and after hugs and photos, they moved on to a lunch of hamburgers and french fries. Campers played yard games, caught up on their time and camp, and introduced their siblings to their friends. The boys left after about an hour and a half! Everyone reported to have had a great time!

Be sure to check out the photos on CampInTouch in the next few days to see the proofs of Kim and Summer’s Brother/Sister photos that will be available for purchase at closing.

Tonight's evening activity was Calender Girls. The girls moved around camp to different stations and posed for fun and silly photos with their cabins. The girls had a blast dressing up for holidays such as St Patrick's Day, Christmas, Easter and 4th July. The end result will be a calendar which the girls will bring home on closing day.

Daily Update - Division Night

Tuesday, July 26, 2022

Heads for the Day Carnival prize winners cashed in their win today!

Today KK H was our Head of Field Sports for the day. She shadowed Hattie throughout the day which includes teaching the Field Sports classes and working in the office! She started off her day with the Seniors and taught them how to play Speedball and then did a dizzy bat relay race with them! We then came to the office and helped KK work on her art project to earn her points on her Camp Champ Award. Then we headed over to the Teen class where KK did a dizzy bat relay race and a 400 meter three legged race! She did such a great job being Head of Field Sports of the day!

Luciana C got to be Head of Cabin Life today. All day she did Carrie’s schedule, which mainly consists of canoeing and random head work. Lu had a great time and loved seeing a sneak peak into the behind the scenes of camp. Her favorite part of the day was definitely getting to stand in the middle of the heart and say Good Morning to the camp.

Bella B, looked the part in her senior staff shirt. Bella shadowed headstaff member Amy-Lee. Bella walked the camp with helping in climbing, sitting in on a Heart Lite meeting with PD Carole and helped announce during evening flag. Bella was outstand and will make a great headstaff member one day in the near future.

Volunteer Voices met after lunch today to practice for Sunday service. I am always so amazed with how quickly the girls pick up the songs, and how beautiful they sound on Sunday!

Junior Gymkhana was held after 6th period. And the T-Birds took the win with a score of 66 - 21.

Tonight for division night the minions did a slip n slide! They had so much fun going with their friends and counselors down the slip n slide! They had plenty of water guns, soap, and fun to last through the whole night!

Ice Cream at Jane’s was enjoyed by the Sophomore campers tonight! As always the campers got their fill on Blue Bell Birthday Cake flavored ice cream with lots of yummy toppings. After a tour of Jane’s home, the girls settled in for the night!

Juniors had a fun night of painting! We held canvas night in the dining hall and the campers painted their favorite things about camp! We are surrounded by very talented campers! Some of these canvases may even pop up in the end of summer art show!

Tonight the seniors for division night did a color war! They used powdered chalk of all different colors. All the seniors gathered in the big field and started the war. Once everyone was completely colored in color they went to the River for a River jump!

Las Vegas came to the Hill Country last night as the Teens dressed in their finest clothing and tried their luck at winning a Chic-Fil-A for their Cabin.

The girls had a blast playing black jack and roulette while sipping on their sodas and eating popcorn.

A great night was had by all, but the real winners of the night were the 16 year olds who won the treat and will enjoy it, later this week.

Daily Update - Mountain Top

Monday, July 25, 2022

It’s Christmas at Camp!!!

Camper woke up to Christmas carols and trinkets from Santa!

Today in field sports, our campers prepared for running field day by timing for the different events. Field Day is Friday and everyone is super excited!

This year at camp we have established a new patch. While at camp, campers may earn medals and patches in multiple activity areas, riflery, archery, canoe, horseback, swim and tennis.  These medals and patches are then displayed on their Hearts and they earn points for their sisterhood by achieving these levels. In the past few years we have had campers who have gone back to earn a second round in certain areas in order to receive the points. So, this year we devised a new award called Camp Champ which is targeted to multiple areas of camp focusing on leadership and service.  A camper may work on the Camp Champ patch once they have achieved the highest level in four of the six main areas.  We currently have one camper working towards their Camp Champ.

Today as part of working toward her Camp Champ Patch, camper, KK H, explained Heart O’ the Hills history to the Minions and played a game with them to reinforce the Eight Traits.

At lunch Santa came to visit! The grinch was on camp, but thankfully no Christmas was taken!

After 6th period we had our Sisterhood Officer photos and All-Sisterhood Panos. These photos will be available for purchase on closing day!

This evening we sang Happy Birthdy to counselor Mariana M.

Tonight’s evening activity is Mountain Top! This Mountain Top is special because it is our warm fuzzy tribe hill. For warm fuzzy, the Firelighters read the warm fuzzy story and pass out warm fuzzies that signify giving someone joy, love, and happiness.

After Mountain Top, our campers came down from the hills to cheer on the front lawn. We announced our 2nd set of Sisters O’ the Week recipients. They are: Minion Rosie N, Sophomore Alex J, Junior Birdie C, Senior Keni W, and Teen Bella B, LITe Alexis W, and Counselor Ruby M.

Daily Update - Junior Swim Meet

Sunday, July 24, 2022

Because we like to keep our campers on our toes, today was Saturday schedule. We really wanted our 2B campers to jump right into their activities and that is exactly what they did!

This morning we were welcomed with cloud cover and a refreshing breeze.

After 6th period, we held our Junior Swim Meet. Crossed Arrows took the win with a score of 65 to 41.

Eat out tonight was a camper favorite of hot dogs and lays potato chips! As girls finished eating, they went to their rooms to get ready for movie night in the Big Field.

Our movie tonight was High School Musical 2, which lead to girls dancing in the field singing along with the movie. It was so fun!  Campers were given Kit Kats and Soda and headed to bed at a reasonable time for a movie night!

Daily Update - Split Term 2B Opening

Saturday, July 23, 2022

While the whole world thought it was Saturday… It was actually Sunday here at camp!

So we slept in a little, and had a leisurely morning until we were all called down to the waterfront for a beautiful Teen-Let Worship Service.

Our Teen campers, the oldest age group, led the all-faith worship this morning. They modified popular tunes to fit the camp theme, took turns leading the prayers and reading the birthday blessing. Each 16-year-old mentioned specific memories of camp, and called out her friends and mentors.

After lunch, we greeted our Split 2B campers, 34 of whom are here for the first time! It was so much fun to greet them. They barely hit the ground when Sunday Seminar activities kicked off, and they jumped right in with heading down to the waterfront for swim level tests!

After seminar activities we held flag a few minutes early so that we could sort our new campers into their sisterhoods. A second term tradition is for the oldest campers to select two counselors as Geek O’ the Week, and this weeks honor went to Hattie J and Carrie C

Our new T-birds are:
Whitney B
Peyton B
Valentina C
Regina C
Lulu C

After our sisterhood sorting we had pizza cheers and pizza!

Tonight is Crossed Arrows Vespers. We can’t wait to hear the songs and sayings they offer up. I can say how amazing the rehearsal sounded last night, though!

Daily Update - Split Term 2A Closing

Today was the 8th birthday of camper Julieta A.

While we are sad to see campers leave, we were excited to see some new Heart LITe and counselor arrivals for the last two weeks of camper! Welcome Back Heart LITes Avery S and Julia J and counselors Isabella T and Maddie F. Bailey B also returned a few days ago to join us for the rest of the summer and we could not be happier!

After a full morning of classes and lunch, we held an Awards Ceremony for our departing Split A campers.

Each girl received an 8x10 cabin photo, an Award O’ Merit (some girls got two or even three), and if they passed a swim, riflery, archery, tennis, horseback or canoeing level, they would have received those medals or patches. If they participated in Volunteer Voices, they would have received a patch for that.

We recognize our five, three-year campers with a silver medallion with a three-leaf clover design, each leaf being our double-heart logo. We had six five-year and no 10-year campers, but we did have three seven-term campers who received their seven-year ring—an open gold heart inset in a silver heart.

Each Sisterhood named special award winners.

Thunderbirds recognized their Braves O’ the Split Term:

Minion Penny H, Sophomore Kate M, Junior Amelia R, Senior Kate P and Teen Sofia B. Thumbs Up award winners were Zooey D and Pearl R.

Crossed Arrows named Froggy O’ the Split Term Olivia M, Junior Shooting Star Katerina C, Senior Shooting Star

Rayven Kidd, Teen Shooting Star Jaqi, C and Arrows Up Claire T.

The minute we had the last spoonful of homemade ice cream after lunch, it was time to bid farewell to our Split Termers. So many re-enrolled for 2023! It makes us glad knowing that we will see them again. We waved goodbye to Nurse My W, and waved a returning hello to Juanita, who will be helping Georgia head up our wellness center for the second half of the July Term.

This evening we had an easy night as everyone was still a little tired from Field Day. S’minions had Crafts and Stories, Juniors had Ice Cream at Jane’s, Seniors has a make up movie night after missing it for Point Theater last week, and Teens went to Riverhill for a lovely dinner!

Daily Update - Under the Sea Field Day

Thursday, July 21, 2022

Today was Under the Sea Field Day! Our campers started with the pajama pep rally, and they cheered with their sisterhoods to start off the day and get everyone excited for the events to come.

At the Heart for flag, the campers went all out for their costumes! There were many mermaids, The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo characters, and we even had some tridents! After breakfast, our campers gathered in their sisterhoods to do a few more cheers to put some extra excitement into their spirits. After a quick stretch and warmup, the events began! Campers competed in Flingin’ Fishies, Octopus Legs, Jumping Jellyfish, and Carrying Nemo.

A camp favorite that we do is where the Minion campers feed the Firelighter of their sisterhood Jello! It is always so fun for the Minions, Fighterlighters, and the other campers and counselors to watch.

To finish off the morning events, our teen campers competed in a dance off where they are presented with a song and have 15 minutes to prepare a dance number. This field day, the song was a remix of the tv show Spongebob’s theme song. Both sisterhoods did an amazing job, and they had a variety of dance moves, kicklines, cartwheels, and even some cheerleading stunts! After each sisterhood performed, we headed to lunch where it was announced that the Thunderbirds won the Teen Dance Off!

After the morning events, Zinnia Zenith got to cash in their carnival prize of Sonic drinks! Most girls opted for Milkshakes, and one person chose a soda!

After the extended siesta, the divisions split up to each play a game. Our Sophomores and Minions played Crate Ball, the Juniors played Mat Ball, and our Seniors and Teens played Dodgeball. They had so much fun competing with the girls in their division and sisterhood!

We announced the High Point Campers who earned the most points for their sisterhood in their division. Our Minion was Hazel H, Sophomore Archer J, Junior Josie Z, Senior Isabella C, and Teen Sterling M. The Thunderbird sisterhood ended up winning this field day, and they were so excited.

The final score ended up being 410 for the Crossed Arrows and 418 for the Thunderbirds. All of the sisterhood competitions so far have been very close, so we are looking forward to continuing an amazing and exciting term! This Under the Sea Field Day was so much fun for all campers and counselors to experience!

Tonight’s activity is Tie-Dye for the Minions through Seniors. The Teens had bunk night, and Agarita Attic watched Mamma Mia in the village as the carnival prize won by BB Y.

Daily Update - Carnival

Wednesday, July 20, 2022

Today we celebrated the birthdays of two campers, Adley W and Trista L.

During lunch today, we showed off our bribery items. We have a long tradition (borrowed from Camp Stewart) of "bribing" our campers to sign up for next year before leaving this year. Each girl who does will receive her choice of a nice "bribe". Those campers whose parents gave them permission to sign up, were able to select a bribery item!  We will have bribery available at pickup, or if you respond before then, we will go ahead and let the girls choose and receive the gift. You can do it online here, or at closing after talking to your camper.

Also during lunch, Heart LITe Alexis W had her drama class perform their Lion King performance they have been practicing. It was so cute!

During 5th period, our 2A Junior campers held a swim meet. There were 5 races held, and the results were 28 Arrows to 32 T-Birds.

After sixth period was the Senior/Teen Gymkhana. There were two events held today, barrels and pole bending. All the races were close, but T-Birds came away with the victory, 45-46.

All day long we have been anticipating the Carnival! It kicked off after flag lowering, with the eat-out meal including corn dogs, nachos, roasted corn, popcorn chicken, popcorn, sno-cones, and cotton candy. Not our healthiest meal, but likely highly ranked among the kids!

Everyone got into the spirit of carnical with costumes and props, from game board pieces to dressing like cards from popular games! The games and booths included a dice roll, Pin the money bag on Rich Uncle Moneybags, photo booth, pie face booth, ball toss, basketball shootout, penny pitch, milk jug toss, cakewalk, bozo-style bucket toss, face painting, fortune telling, and so much more!

At each booth, campers can earn tickets, and place them in the boxes representing grand prizes. At the end of the night, one ticket will be drawn from each box and the winning camper receives the designated award or privilege. It’s always something super.

Daily Update - Mountain Top

Tuesday, July 19, 2022

This morning campers camp back almost as soon as the sun came up, after having breakfast on the trail! The reviews for overnight were mixed… everything from “terrible” to “just ok” to “great! But overall the reviews were “..it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected.”

Our classes started at 3rd period, and our teens arrived back from their Mo Ranch trip around the beginning of 4th period!

Tonight was the much awaited Big Sis/Lil Sis reveal on Mountain Top. Lil’ Sisters have been getting little clues and gifts since the beginning of the term, and the mystery was FINALLY revealed last night at a really fun Mountain Top.

After coming off their hills and reuniting as the Heart Sisterhood, we announce Sisters O’ the Week. These are the girls who have done their best all week to bring out their own best. Girls recognized were Minion Elise W, Sophomore Adele L, Junior Charlotte Y, Senior Judith M, Teen Kate H, LITe Kristen C, and Counselor Yvonne O.

Daily Update - Overnight

Monday, July 18, 2022

The morning at least was a normal day!

This afternoon we had extended siesta, but part of that time, the girls spent getting packed and prepped for their overnight tonight.

Once upon a time, the divisions took turns going on overnight campouts. It was always a world class hassle trying to organize activities when some of the counselors were out on the trail every single Friday.

Then the light bulb came on. What if we just invest in a huge quantity of ice chests and Igloo coolers, and everyone camped out on the same evening? Duh.

Easier on the kitchen staff, easier on the activity schedules—and we have plenty of acreage to use different spots for every group.

Minions and Sophomores camp out at the Opening Ceremony grounds, Juniors at the Mountain Lion Maw, where Caballo Creek begins, and Seniors across the river from the canoe dock at our Treehouse. The Teens are camping about 20 miles away at Mo Ranch.  So the main campground is eerily empty. I know the controlled chaos will be back soon enough, and am thankful for that.

Daily Update - Sunday @ Camp

Sunday, July 17, 202

We love a Sunday at camp! Everyone sleeps-in an extra hour, and breakfast is a buffet that the girls can attend in their pajamas. The morning is leisurely (ish), until ….

At 10:30 the Volunteer Voices gather to warm up at Cypress Hollow to help lead worship in song, and today those voices were accompanied by three guitars! It was a big group of voices and accompaniment!

At 11, the all-faith worship service began. The worship committee set us up. Claudia Sullivan, PhD, a former Heart camper spoke to the girls.

For lunch, we enjoyed the traditional Heart/Stewart Southern Sunday lunch of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and homemade rolls (orange rolls ala Raleigh House this time)! And our homemade vanilla ice cream was served with chocolate syrup on the side.

Siesta was extend a half hour, after which campers could choose to participate in many different seminar day activities.

As soon as the pizza delivery arrived, the campers gathered for flag lowering and “pizza cheers”. The cheers are a competition between divisions to determine who gets to go first in line. The juniors came out on top!

Counselor vespers was tonight! The staff has been practicing for this night all of summer. All of the campers watched as the counselors danced, sang to their heart's content, and brought out their goofy sides. The campers loved seeing a new side of their counselors and it definitely brought the camp together. We can not wait to see what the sisterhoods sing to us on the next Sunday.

Daily Update - Movie Night

Saturday, July 16, 2022

Today was the birthday of Adelaide B.

This morning our campers got to sleep in a half hour extra, and have breakfast in bed. Everyone got homemade pigs in a blanket, poptarts, fruit, juice, milk, and a fresh doughnut that we picked up from a local donut shop in town! The donuts were still warm, which is the best way to eat them!!!

Volunteer Voices met for practice today in preparation for Worship tomorrow!

After our sixth period was the first athletic competition of the term. Th Senior-Teen swim meet stirred up a lot of excitement and loud cheering from the cheering section. In the end, the Arrows dominated with a final score of 86 to 102, and took the aqua ribbon for their guidon.

Tonight was our first “eat out” which was sloppy joes, chips and cookies on the lawn, followed by the movie, Finding Nemo, along with candy and coke for snack.

Our Senior campers attended Point Theater tonight. Point Theater is a local theater that puts on two summer plays each year. This term the campers got to see Matilda! It was so well done, especially knowing so many young children played such big roles!

It has been a full, crazy, and uneven week of adjustment, but it feels to me like things are finally in their normal, happy rhythms. It’s good to feel it.

The counselors have written reports on each camper, and they should come to you no later than tomorrow in an email.

Daily Update - Stewart Dance

Friday, July 15, 2022

Our forecast for the day had the temperatures much cooler today. Temperatures barely creeped over 90 degrees for a few short hours and cooled off again quickly after which was a welcome relief.

The dining hall was booming at lunch with excitement about the Stewart Dance. Stories of campers planning their outfits and hair, or what music they hoped to hear filled the dining hall.

Because our first bus load of campers will be loading into vehicles at 7:00PM, we shortened our 5th and 6th period classes. With activities ending at 5:15, this gave campers plenty of time to get ready before the buffet opened at 6:00pm for dinner!

The Stewart Dance is a long standing tradition between both of the camps in order to promote new friendships and a chance for both camps to explore new opportunities! Some of you may not know this but Camp Stewart is actually our brother camp. They are both run by the same family, and that is why we do events together. Because of this connection, we have always loved the opportunities we get to have events with each other. It is always a blast anytime the two camps come together, and we are looking forward to heading over to Camp Stewart tonight for the dance! There will be plenty of laughs, cookies, fun, and dance moves for everyone!

After a few quick runs, all of the campers made it to Camp Stewart for the Dance. So many of our campers went all out in dressing up! Lots of masks were worn by our heart girls, and many of the Stewart boys wore togas over their uniforms.  The cookies were not as freely given as they were at Heart O’ the Hills dance in First Term. You actually had to know a little bit about the person you were going up to get your cookie with! The music was upbeat and fun, and the girls danced the night away!

Daily Update - Glow Night

Thursday, July 14, 2022

Today was Valentine’s Day. It was sweet to see so many of the girls dressed with extra doses of red and hearts sprayed everywhere! My favorite holiday, for sure. We distributed blank Valentine’s cards for campers to be able to send little messages to their friends, and tonight at supper we had homemade Heart Sopapillas.

Today was the birthday of Head O’ Heart LITe Amylee Nolan.

After 5th period the winds picked up around here and a storm blew in. We finally got some much needed rain. So 6th period was on a rainy day schedule, and tonight’s eat out was held indoors!

Over the past 5 days, we have had a lot more lightning, wind, and thunder than actual rainfall. Our rainfall total was 0.63 from the last 5 days, but we welcome any of it.  The bad part is that the lightning interrupts the activities but the good part is that the cloud cover cools us off.

Tonight is Glow Night for most of camp, but the Minions will be having their ice cream party at Mesa Manner. A camper favorite, the ice cream party takes place for each division on a separate night. Everybody gets to eat all the ice cream they want (until we run out, which doesn’t often happen), and slather all the toppings on it. Tonight’s flavor is Birthday Cake.

Everyone else gathered in the village in their brightest clothes with glow sticks all around. Because of the rain, the girls came straight to the village for their glow party instead of searching for hidden glow sticks around camp. They had a blast dancing to some of their favorite music and hanging out with everyone. There was a raffle with glow in the dark signable pillowcases that we gave away to four lucky kids! It was agreat way to Kick off our eventful evening activities!

Daily Update - Division Night

Wednesday July 13, 2022

Today was the birthday of counselor Aoife P and camper Sarah D.

Our campers this term have been working REALLY hard to keep their cabins clean! There were 13 total cabins who received perfect inspections today!

New this year, Seminar day is now split up between three Sundays at camp. After siesta today campers signed up for Seminars coming up on Sunday! There was a LOT of excitement at sign-up time!

This evening we had division night.

Our Minion division met with their counselors and Lollie and read a book about butterflies and painted butterflies based on the story.

The sophomore division and their counselors met with Carole on the Pickleball Court for games.  The games included the Great Toilet Paper Cabin Wrap, Hula-Hoop Rock Paper Scissors, Connect 4 Race and much more.  The girls especially loved their impromptu game of “Little Sally Walker”.

The Junior division went to the waterfront for King of the Blob.  The juniors returned to their cabins wet and laughing.

The Senior division went to Jane’s for ice cream.  They looked very cute wearing their PJ’s and making the best ice cream dish they could.

Our Teen division tie-dyed Heart O’ the Hills bandannas.  Today the bandannas are drying and we can’t wait to see the final product.

First term is moving along and everyone is busy and having a great time.

Daily Update - Common Ground

Tuesday, July 12, 2022

This morning we skipped Flag thanks to a much welcomed shower.

After breakfast the rain hung around a bit and the activities were able to start on a rainy day schedule. But not before the long awaited announcement of the war canoe teams were made in the Village. Campers raced to the village in excitement to see who made the team! Campers who did not make the team have the option to switch into a class called Second War Canoe, where campers can practice and improve their skills for next summer!

They are as follows:

SWC
Catherine B, KK H, Rhea H, Brooke J, Sarah J, Zoe M, Judith M, Sterling M, Valeria M, Elizabeth P, Isabelle T, Emily V, and Peyton Y

PWC
Riley B, Elana C, Caroline C, Piper E, Bailee G, Hattie H, Marly M, Avery M, Zoe N, Faith R, True R, Jessie W, and Charlotte Y

We also have our 5 girls who will continue on with Advanced Riding at Camp Stewart.  Sadie J, Eleanor L, Sterling M, Kate P, and Sophia R

One thing about the rain and cloud cover this morning, it kept the temperatures down today! Which we were very thankful for!

Before lunch we held run-offs for about 7 different officer positions, but by the time lunch began, we had all of our races settled.

As all of the tryouts have been concluded, at the end of day, all the necessary (and some just wanted) schedule changes were arranged. And surprisingly there were not as many as we normally see!

Tonight the officers were announced and sworn in at a joint ceremony of the Sisterhoods called Common Ground.

Daily Update - Officer Elections

Monday, July 11, 2022

Zippity Doo Da
Zippity Ay
My, Oh, My
What a Wonderful Day…

And what a wonderful day it was!!! It was the first rotation through the MWF schedule. Because of the presence of heat lightning, our afternoon saw a short delay, but everything went on as planned after that!

Thanks to the cloud cover, it cooled off significantly after lunch!

During division gathering today, campers nominated their fellow campers for different officer positions. Each division will elect two representatives. One being Secret Keeper which is essentially a fire lighter in the making. The other is Song Leader, the camper who leads her division in cheers. There is one additional office called Story Teller. This is not limited to a division, but instead anyone can run. The responsibilities of a Story Teller include but are not limited to, making posters, flyers for events, and awards for different accomplishments within the sisterhood.

Tonight the Sisterhoods will gather in their meeting spots to conduct officer elections, with each candidate giving campaign speeches, and secret balloting.

The girls dressed up to add some spice, T-birds in animal themed attire and the Arrows in Luau attire. Runoffs (if necessary) will be held in brief meetings tomorrow, and results will be announced tomorrow evening at Common Ground.

Until tomorrow…

Daily Update - Mountain Top

Sunday, July 10, 2022

What a great first full day of camp! Although it was Sunday outside our gates, it was a “Tuesday” at The Heart.

About an hour before Zippity Doo Da sounded to wake up the rest of the camp, the aspiring Top Elite Riders met to try out for Quadrille. It’s the Top Elite girls who perform the rehearsed routine at the end of the term. It is a big commitment for the girls selected because throughout the entirety of the term they wake up and saddle in time for 6:30 practice.

We are so proud of the following girls that made the cut:

  • Faith R
  • Sterling M
  • Peyton Y
  • Sara J
  • Sadie J
  • Hattie-Beth P

We wanted to go ahead and launch into regular activities, so we followed the TTS schedule (so that tomorrow we can resume with MWF on an actual MWF day). In the morning, we saw campers on horses down at the stables, and drama classes working on their first performance piece which is Lion King themed. Cooking class was making something that made our office smell absolutely amazing – I think it was homemade meatballs!

After getting rained out yesterday (lightning was the concern), the morning swim classes were evaluated and placed into their Red Cross swim levels. Our campers on horseback that missed their initial evaluations on “Woody”, our wooden horse, completed those today as well!

Our afternoon classes looked a little different thanks to a thunderstorm that rolled through! Rainy day classes happened, which led to card games in the dining hall and a large Just Dance class in the village! We will give those evaluations for the afternoon classes another attempt tomorrow, but rest assured, fun was had by all.

Tomorrow we have 17 girls heading to Stewart to try out for the Advanced English Riding class that takes place under the watchful coaching of Jane’s brother, Jeepers Ragsdale at Camp Stewart. We’ll announce the results when we have all of them!

The Sisterhoods met today to elect their Fire Lighters, which is the highest office. There were 5 Thunderbird candidates and 5 Crossed Arrow candidates.

The Crossed Arrows had to hold a runoff between 3 people. Results were announced on the hills tonight at the first Mountain Top meetings.

Our Second Term 2022 firelighters are Faith R for the Thunderbirds and Catherine B for the Crossed Arrows.

Daily Update - Opening Day

Opening Day was as smooth as we could ask for.All the campers arriving by car came in a steady stream, with only a few having to double back for a second circuit because of an item left in the car! Even with a slightly delayed start, the buses arrived by 2pm as scheduled! As campers arrived, they settled right into their cabins and they were able to jump right into camp! The time seemed to go nearly as quickly as our sack lunches were downed, and then we were in our all-camp welcome meeting in the Village. The meeting was complete with introductions and instructions for the rest of the day!

After the meeting we began the fun task of selecting classes and getting swim and horseback evaluations done. Sadly, during schedule changes we were surprised by thunderstorm warnings, so we had to put those evaluations on hold until the campers attend their first classes!

Supper was the opening day of camp tradition of pasta and meat sauce and the Jello cake for dessert. I also wondered why spaghetti was the first nights meal since most of our campers  and counselors are wearing white for Opening Ceremonies! Turns out there is actually a reason! Spaghetti is a camper favorite and a common comfort meal. It is done in hopes to help with the process of settling into camp!

Afterward, Eau de Bug Spray filled the air as campers prepared to divide into groups for the Sisterhood Sorting ceremonies. Former campers gathered either with the Powerful Thunderbirds or the Strong Crossed Arrows, and new campers gather together at the Ark to be lined up.

The counselors sang to the girls, Jane read the Legend of the Guadalupe, and the Sponsors explained the opportunities and responsibilities of belonging to a Heart Sisterhood. One by one the newbies were called forward to draw their bead.
