Merriam-Webster’s word of the day today is solstice. It was a good reminder that today is the winter solstice, and it is a happy occasion for me!
It should come as no surprise to anyone that I LOVE CAMP. As a child, I endured school and lived for summer. It was the time of year that camp happened, with all of its fun and challenges and learning opportunities, and most of all, my true friends.
Camp was the place for me to be my true self, and be surrounded by the most genuine friendships I ever experienced. The things we went through together were opportunities to bond, from learning dances, to singing harmony together to the same songs, to striving to out-do each other in contests of wits and strength, to a zillion inside jokes that we all shared!
You know you’ve got a camp friend when she has a nickname for her nickname.
So why is winter solstice such a happy day? Camp girls know it! It’s because from now on, days get longer! Summer is now on the way in rather than on the way out.
It’s nearly time to get the trunk out of the attic, dust it off, and take inventory.
Come, summer, come!
