After a lovely time in Edinburgh, it was time for Jeb, Conor, and I to head to Manchester. When we boarded the train in Edinburgh I fell asleep before the train even pulled out and I woke up when we arrived in Manchester. One of the things I was looking forward to the most in Manchester was attending a Manchester United “football” game! One of Camp Stewart’s previous counselors Matt Madden has season tickets to Manchester United games and he got us seats!
When we arrived in Manchester we went straight to our hotel. When I walked into my room I noticed that none of the lights in the room worked. I tried all of the lamps, the lights in the bathroom, and the lights on the desk. None of them would turn on. Right before I was about to phone the front desk to let them know that there was something wrong with the electricity, I noticed a little slot by the door that said “place room key here.” So, I placed my room key in the slot and all of the sudden all of the lights started working! I was so glad that I discovered that before I called the front desk!
After getting all settled in, it was time for some lunch. Jeb and I headed down the street to get a
burger and fries. Once we were done with lunch we met up with Conor to do a little shopping for the Football game. Number one on my list was to get a jersey! After all, you can’t attend a professional sporting event without a jersey, right? So we took off to explore Manchester and look for official Manchester United gear. I was able to find a nice kids jersey that I could fit into. With my jersey purchased it was time to head back to the hotel to get ready for the game.
I was very nervous I would get cold while at the game so I had on a tank top, an under armour long sleeved shirt, a sweatshirt, my jersey, two pairs of tights, a pair of leggings, my jeans, socks, boots, my jacket, gloves, a scarf, and ear muffs! Whew! I was not going to get cold while I was at the game.
Jeb knew that Matt was able to get us the tickets. What he didn’t know was that Matt had managed to come down from Ireland to attend the game with us. We wanted it to be a surprise. So right before we were about to leave Matt walked into the lobby with our tickets for the game!
Jeb was so surprised and happy to see a former camp employee!
It was so much fun being being at a professional football game in the United Kingdom. I felt very
English! Unfortunately, football/soccer is not a sport that I am very familiar with. Luckily I had Conor to be my personal commentator and keep me up to date with everything that was going on! Manchester United ended up winning 2 to 1! It was a great game with lots of cheering and fun!
The next day was the Camp America Fair! Between Heart and Stewart we had so many former staff members there to help us out. From Heart we had Alissa Stroud and Abby Williams (both of whom are coming back this summer) and from Stewart we had Conor, Matt, Dom, Ally, and Daniel. It was a great fair with a lot people interested in working at a summer camp in America. For Heart I hired a girl named Sian to be our videographer and a girl named Elizabeth to teach fencing, riflery, and Archery. I am very excited to have them on board this summer! After the fair we had a wonderful dinner with all of the former counselors who had helped us out at the fair. We had so much fun chatting with each other and telling camp stories.
I was exhausted by the time I made it back to my hotel room. I was so ready for sleep! The next day we got up to catch the train to London. Although our time in Manchester was short, we had a lot of fun and hired some great new staff members.
