Heartily Engaging All Senses
Screentime is the hallmark of the 21st century. This magic at our fingertips and before our eyes separates us from our ancestors in a way that nothing else can. Unfortunately, the reality presented by screens is a less complete experience than we were made for. The evolution of both school and work has demanded that we have screens in order to function. At camp however, we seek to provide experiences that require engaging all senses.
Experiences are what separate life from existence. Watching a video of a canoe gliding through a river is very different from submerging the paddle yourself, getting droplets of cool water on your skin, and hearing the lap of water against the hull. The smell of the river grows to become nostalgia. It is these little things that we are so often told to appreciate. At camp, girls have an opportunity to enjoy these precious details of life.
Engaging all senses is more than finding several little ways to enjoy life- it enhances one’s ability to learn. Our ability to retain lessons is bolstered when we experience what we are learning, not just observe. Kids love learning, and all the more so if they can do it in a fun way. Play is essential to developing minds, so at camp it’s a priority of ours to make the most of playing!
So we’ve covered the “H” and “E” of H.E.A.R.T.S. Stay tuned for the “A” which is “authentic role models,” they’re kind of what makes the camp world go ‘round and we are super thankful for each one of them!
“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt
